The chickens have come home
From every corner of every state

Each day a new egg is laid
Born of the fertile roost of hate

Each new headline
Announcing yet another birth

Decades of neglect
Decades of fanciful mirth

What were we thinking
When the trumpet sounded the note

When the poisonous rivers flowed
And the deceitful voices spoke

Some warned us
Don’t be fooled by promises of glory

No one’s minding the store
An unattended coop — a foul smelling story

The sinful sound of mockery
Posing as democracy

Pillaging the hearth in
what has become autocracy

Cacophonous chickens
mindless
headless
heedless
come home
