I came to see you sleep
hour after hour.
I found you cuddled
in the chair
sculpted by your body.
The empty bed
is no longer bothered
by your rejection
it remains the sole witness
to your dreams.
You slept
under my watch
in yesterday’s clothes
cozy in your cradle
softly as grass holds dew.
Your loosely laced fingers
barely touched
your feet twitched
eyes fluttered
your breath gasped
then went silent
one octave above death,
then easy
like the river
that flows nearby.
The light illuminated your beautiful layers
softening the lines of your
forehead and temples
cheeks and jaw
ears and nose
your lips,
slightly parted.
You woke slowly but fully
our eyes met, transfixed
they kissed
one last time
as the one who combs your hair
gently turned your chair
and wheeled you away.
