A White Man Speaks

I write to you as a white man.
I write to you as a dare to myself.
I write to you in the only way I know.
I write as I do not want to disappoint myself.
I write to you from a history where the whiteness did not melt with the snow.
I write to you as a white man married to a brown woman with brown children.
I write to you as a white man who has not heard the hurtful comments made to my brown wife.
I write to you as a white man who is sometimes slow to recognize the pain of racism brought into
my home as I am a white man and I have been told this.
