As I was writing this brief editorial I heard the news that Palestine and Israel were at war. The pictures on the TV were horrific. Children, old people, and young people were killed. It was unbearable to look at and listen to the news.

I was surprised that many friends did not say or write any comments. My impression is we are afraid to speak or write because of fear of retaliation. I also had another thought that in these catastrophic situations, we became invisible to the world and ourselves. A protection, perhaps an illusion that everything will be okay? Or is it another denial on our part?

To survive collectively we must speak and write about our feelings and emotions. Critica is a good avenue for reflection, a space to think about the suffering in the world. We chose as our theme “The Visible and The Invisible.” In this issue, we show our visibility via essays, philosophical ideas, poems, and visual images. I think that images and words are important to preserve the survival of history. Perhaps with these images, disturbing as they are, we can learn how to preserve the past, not the historical past but a past that resurges through violence and madness.
